Delmar ramps up the amps at tournament time. The Wildcats step between the lines onto the pitch for 60 minutes of frenzied intensity.
“That is the way we have to play, and when we’re on turf, we have to take advantage of our time because we practice on grass,” said coach Jodi Hollamon.
Delmar disposed of a good Caravel team 7-0 Nov. 13, with a 32-0 advantage in shots and 18-0 edge in penalty corners. Hollamon was subdued after the game, bordering on being mad at her team's play.
“We were mediocre at best today,” she said. “This time of year, the mission for Delmar is to win a state title. Our players know when we’re not performing at full intensity. The next team [Sussex Academy] is just waiting to knock us off.”
Delmar got goals from its big guns, as Josie Hollamon tallied a hat trick, while Jordan Hollamon and Maci Bradford each had two goals.
Emma Shockley, heading to West Chester University, protects goalie Kelly Davis, and comes up to insert on corners and make things happen when the ball is live in unsettled situations.
Shockley had an assist on two of Josie Hollamon’s goals. Josie had an assist on Bradford’s first goal at 13:12 of the first period.
Josie and Shockley talked after the game about the team’s approach during the season and how at tournament time they turn up the dial.
“We’re going hard for 60 minutes – that is the way we approach the game,” Josie said. “It’s never about lack of sportsmanship.”
“It’s just Delmar hockey,” Shockley said. “We put in the effort all year round. None of us want to spend a single second on the sideline.”
Delmar will play Sussex Academy Wednesday, Nov. 17, at DE Turf in the semifinals of the Division II bracket.
