Delmarva Christian baseball royally defeats Seahawks 12-2

April 27, 2022

The Delmarva Christian baseball squad used 15 hits and sharp fielding to ground the Seahawks 12-2 April 25. The Royals move to 3-8, while the Seahawks are 4-6.

The Seahawks scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab the early lead. The Royals bounced back with a first-pitch homer off the bat of Tommy Obertubbesing. The home squad put up three more in the first, and the scoring didn’t stop there, as they added one in the second, three each in the fourth and fifth innings, and a single insurance run in the sixth to finish the scoring.

Dylan Briggs led the Royals, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Chester Furmanek went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Chandler Brown and Aaron Brown each had an RBI. Obertubbesing also added a double and had an RBI. Carter Breasure delivered a 2-for-2 performance with a double. Kasey Bell had two hits, while Malakai Jones had one hit.

Briggs went the distance for the Royals, scattering four hits and striking out five.

Patrick Donahue, Theodore Layton, Wyatt Skinner and Wesley McLaughlin each had a hit for the Seahawks. McLaughlin was credited with an RBI.

Elisha Jones took the loss for the Seahawks and was followed on the mound by Doug Horton, Gavin Boos and Aiden Cannon. They teamed for five strikeouts.

“Sussex Academy came out ready to fight with a strong first inning,” said Royals manager Eric Reiske. “I was pleased with how we responded. Dylan Briggs pitched efficiently and our defense helped keep the pitch count low, playing mostly mistake-free and sacrificing their bodies for him behind the plate and in the field. I loved our approach at the plate and on the base path. We preached that singles are just as cool as doubles and home runs, and to be aggressive on the bases. It worked. These kids are blessed with God-given talent and tenacity, and it’s up to them to hone and use those gifts to glorify God.”

The Royals travel to Laurel Wednesday, April 27, while the Seahawks travel to Smyrna Friday, April 29.
