Dewey Goes Pink 5K event to support breast cancer awareness Oct. 5

October 1, 2024

The first Saturday in October in Dewey Beach is synonymous with Dewey Goes Pink and The Gugie Run, set this year for Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Starboard restaurant. The event brings together families, friends and fundraising teams to raise awareness and support for breast cancer issues.

Dewey Goes Pink includes both a 5K race/walk and a 1.5-mile fun walk, and while both sold out in August, there are still lots of ways to participate. One is through an online silent auction, which will feature enticing items including trips, gift cards, artwork, sporting event, and signed collectible memorabilia such as an autographed Taylor Swift guitar. The event team has also expanded the auction to include shipping on some items so anyone, regardless of their location, can participate.

The Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery said, “This is one of our biggest events of the year, and it’s incredible to see people coming together in our community to support one another and raise money for this cause.”

Over the last 13 years, the event has raised more than $1.5 million for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, and the money stays here in Sussex County with the local DBCC chapter. These funds help local individuals and families through direct support of those diagnosed with cancer, and by raising awareness and providing access to care with services, outreach and education that bolster the community.

Dewey Goes Pink began when Montgomery and his friend Adam Howard wanted to honor their mothers, who both battled breast cancer. It is a truly personal event, not just for those who are fighting the disease or who attend to support and/or honor their loved ones, but for the founders as well.
