More than 4,400 people took part in the 12th annual Dewey Goes Pink 5K event at The Starboard Oct. 7. An estimated $250,000 to $300,000 was raised this year.
Over the 12 years of Dewey Goes Pink, more than $1.5 million has been raised for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. The proceeds empower the community by raising awareness of breast health issues through outreach, education and support services, to facilitate the early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Steve “Monty” Montgomery, co-owner of The Starboard and Bethany Blues, launched the event in 2011 with Adam Howard, owner of The Body Shop Fitness Center, after their own mothers battled the disease.
“What we joke as the Dewey Bubble with the weather held strong for another outstanding event day,” said Montgomery. “Over 4,400 participants walked and ran, making it the biggest Dewey Goes Pink to date. Feeding our delicious Bethany Blues BBQ to that many is a strain, but our team does a spectacular job in doing so.
Our Starboard staff takes this event so personally that everyone pitches in to ensure it’s set up, executed and cleaned up in perfect fashion. We had a great lineup of presenters along with the best of best in local musicians with Kristen & the Noise, then Bryen OBoyle to make the party itself a special and fun afternoon for all. I couldn’t be more pleased with the entire event and proud of how it all went ... and I took credit for the perfect weather because everyone kept asking me ‘how’d you pull off the weather?!’ I answered, ‘I just kept hitting refresh on the weather app until it read what I needed it to read!’”
