Dewey Beach Police Chief Constance Speake promoted officer Colin Schmidt to sergeant at the Oct. 20 commissioners meeting.

Speake said Schmidt began his career as a patrol officer in Selbyville after graduating from the Delaware State Police Academy in 2006. Schmidt then transferred to Dover Police Department, where he became a certified Council on Police Training instructor, a field training officer and a shift investigator assigned to the detective section.

Schmidt left the field briefly, Speake said, and joined the Dewey Beach Police Department as a part-time officer while working as a residential and commercial construction manager.

“When Colin and I met, I quickly surmised he had a true passion for police work and training young police officers,” Speake said. “It was clear that the younger officers sought his knowledge and guidance.”

Schmidt brings an incredible amount of knowledge and experience to his new role, which will benefit the department as well as residents and visitors of the town, Speake said.
