Individuals looking to dispose of American flags appropriately can now do so at VFW Post 7447, 101 State Road, Rehoboth.

Post member Phil Winkler was the individual who started the project, after getting the idea from the Ocean View VFW. An old, rusty mailbox from New Jersey was cleaned up, stabilized and given a fresh paint job, he said during a brief ceremony Sept. 25.

In addition to Winkler, a number of individuals donated their time and effort to make the box a reality – Garry Tilton of Sussex County Customs, Mike Newsham of Quick Surface Solutions and John Minka of Bewitched Studios. Winkler’s brother, Dave, did the vinyl lettering.

Flags turned in to the VFW will be stored until Flag Day each year. On that day, the flags will be brought to Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 for its annual Flag Day ceremony, which includes a respectful burning of retired flags.
