DNREC issues swimming advisory for coastal beaches

In effect for a week in response to medical waste washing ashore
September 17, 2024

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control issued a recreational water advisory Tuesday, Sept. 17, for Delaware coastal beaches in response to instances of medical waste washing ashore. The advisory is in effect for a one-week period, ending Tuesday, Sept. 23.

According to a notice from Rehoboth Beach, the city’s beach will remain open. Swimming and wading in the ocean are not advised. Currently, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, whose lifeguards are on duty in limited areas through this weekend, is prohibiting access to the ocean due to rough surf conditions as well.

Visitors to the beach are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes in case medical debris continues to come ashore. DNREC continues to monitor the situation.

Rehoboth Beach officials said the beach is being raked twice daily to dispose of any medical debris that washes up.
