When people reference the dog days of summer, this is typically not what they have in mind.

Members of Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company responded for a dog rescue Aug. 4 near Canal Corkran on the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. According to Ryan Peters, an assistant chief with the company’s Station 2 on Route 1, the small dog had been spotted in a tree by a couple on their boat about 11:20 a.m. The boaters called 911.

Peters said he had worked his way to the boaters and found the dog perched on a knot in the tree. The small dog, which Peters said was about 10 inches up the tree, was tan in color and was very scared. The tree was leaning far enough out over the water to allow the dog to climb up but not down.

Peters was given a ladder and a blanket, and was able to calm the dog, wrap it in the blanket and bring it down. Peters said after he brought the dog down, it fell asleep. He said the dog likely climbed up the tree, angled about 30 to 35 degrees over the water, and couldn’t get itself down.

State animal control eventually took the dog. Peters said no chip or collar was found. He said it appeared the dog had been out for a while, as it had a bald spot on its ribcage where it had been up against the tree. The dog was eventually taken to Brandywine SPCA in Georgetown for further care. Representatives from Brandywine Valley did not respond for comment.

Peters said he’s planning to check in on the dog and put his name down if the owners are not found.
