It's officially summer, and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery is celebrating the sunny season of exploration with the launch of its newly canned ales - 60 Minute IPA, SeaQuench Ale and Flesh & Blood IPA - and the rollout of the off-centered, ale-inspired Coastal Delaware Ale Trail, a collection of off-the-beaten-path sites in its own backyard.
The trail is made up of nine compelling destinations in Southern Delaware where adventurous pathfinders can explore sites, scenes and statues in the First State. Not all those who wander are lost; sometimes they're just searching for a great beer and good times. Craft beer fans can quench their thirst for off-centered inspired exploration in and around Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Milton, and they can get the Dogfish Head 360-degree experience with stops at Chesapeake & Maine, a geographically enamored seafood restaurant; The Dogfish Inn, a beer-themed hotel on the harbor; Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, a pub serving up original beer, original, food, and original music since 1995; and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, the production brewery.
Sites on the Coastal Delaware Ale Trail are:
- Bunkers of Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes. Once a World War II-era base, this park is now a multi-biome plot of land with a buried past.
- Cannonball House, Lewes. This historic home still bears the scars from a little run-in with the British in 1813.
- Chesapeake & Maine, Rehoboth Beach. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood, scratch-made cocktails and a one-of-a-kind Smoke in the Water oyster infused with culinary wood-smoked salt.
- Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, Rehoboth Beach. Visitors can enjoy a brewpub exclusive or a fan-favorite 60 Minute IPA at the new pub, and check out the off-centered artwork celebrating the rebellious shared DNA of hip-hop, punk rock and craft brewing.
- Dogfish Inn, Lewes. Guests can check in and check out the curated City Lights classics of American literature library, sip on a can of SeaQuench Ale at a fireside chat or head out on a bike ride and set out on a Dogfish-inspired exploration of goodness.
- Doors of Fame, Rehoboth Beach. Located at the Rehoboth Art League, the artistic hub of Rehoboth Beach, these old doors are covered in the signatures of artists dating back to the 1930s.
- John Milton Statue, Milton. Ale trail explorers can take a picture with the seated statue of the English poet who is ritually dressed in seasonally appropriate clothing.
- Roosevelt Inlet Shipwreck, Lewes. With a mix of strong Atlantic currents, shoals, and ships that for ages were primarily made out of wood, the inlet has the recipe for a veritable coastal boneyard.
- Steampunk Treehouse at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton. Visitors will want to take a wide-angle selfie with the massive Steampunk Treehouse, formerly an art installation for festival-goers at Burning Man. They can also stop by Bunyan's Lunchbox for a sammy, take a tour of the brewery, and visit the tasting room for samplings of Flesh & Blood IPA, 90 Minute IPA, Namaste White or a special brewery offering on tap.
To pack in even more Dogfish Head goodness on the trip, book a stay at the Dogfish Inn, sign up for the Ale Trail All-INNclusive, or partake in a Sunrise Kayak Paddle - or do all three! Located on the canal in Lewes, the inn can easily serve as a boutique basecamp for Dogfish explorations of seaside Delaware. Day-trippers who only have a few hours but want to experience it all can sign up for the Ale Trail All-INNclusive. Guests leave their car at the inn and let Dogfish co-workers chauffeur them around to the ale trail spots. Departing at 9:30 a.m. and returning at 3:30 p.m., they will enjoy a scenic drive to all of the sites along with a stop at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats where they will get a reserved seat for beers and bites, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the production brewery, home to the 100- and 200-barrel brewhouses, wood-aging room, and state-of-the-art bottling and canning lines. For more adventure, visitors can sign up for a serene and scenic sunrise kayak paddle on Lewes beach to enjoy self-guided paddles with kayaks and SUPS and soak in the beginning of a glorious new day.
