Donald C. Kane, retired pilot
Donald C. Kane, 94, of Lewes passed away at Beebe Medical Center Thursday, May 6, 2021. Mr. Kane was born in Summit Bridge, Sept. 4, 1926, son of the late George Theodore and Margaret Deputy Clark Kane. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, George T. Kane Jr. and Roland H. Kane.
Mr. Kane attended A. I. duPont High School, and when he became 17 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served in the Pacific theatre during WWII. He was honorably discharged with the rank of petty officer AMM2C in 1946. Following the military, he returned home and joined his father George T. Kane Sr., and his brother Roland H. Kane, in the Kane’s Texaco family business located at Prices Corner in Wilmington. While working for the family business, Donald formed a keen interest in planes, and earned his required aviation licenses and ratings which would lead him to his next career as a corporate pilot for Atlantic Aviation in 1960. In 1986 he retired from flying.
He loved fishing and boating, as well as helping friends, neighbors and family with any mechanical problems that might have puzzled them. Mr. Kane will be remembered by his family and friends as a very special father, uncle and friend who was a compassionate, diplomatic, and loyal man who deeply loved his family and always put them first.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years: JoAnn Kane; two daughters: Sherry Medek and Shelley (Brad) Taylor; three grandchildren: Ryan Stevens, Courtney Taylor and Travis (Malissa) Taylor; nephew Jeff Kane; and nieces Mary Ellen (Romero) Galasso and Michelle (Arthur) Perry, and numerous grand-nieces and -nephews.
A private celebration of his life for family will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to The Arc of Delaware, 2 South Augustine St., Suite B, Wilmington, DE 19804.
