Dorothy A. Hammel, dedicated caregiver
Dorothy A. Hammel, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at Delaware Hospice Center. She was born July 30, 1937, in Elkton, Md., to the late Mary Ann and Edward Norton Bennett Sr.
Dorothy dedicated her life to caring for others. She worked as a CNA at Lewes Convalescent Center and later at Cadia Rehabilitation Renaissance, where her compassion and kindness touched the lives of many before she retired. Her gentle spirit extended beyond her profession; she was known for her love of houseplants, tending to them with a green thumb and a nurturing heart.
Dorothy enjoyed spending her free time challenging herself with puzzles and watching Westerns, particularly those starring John Wayne. "Gone with the Wind" was also among her favorites, reflecting her love for classic films.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Hammel; her son, Robert Hammel; and her siblings, Edward Bennett Jr. and Myrtle Watts.
She is survived by her loving children, Barbara Colon of Laurel, Md.; Dorothy Hammel of Millsboro; and Angelo Hammel (Jodie) of Milford. Dorothy also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
A dedicated caregiver, a lover of plants, and a fan of Westerns, Dorothy’s legacy lives on through the love she gave and the lives she touched.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Hwy., New Castle.
