Dorothy Mumford, Diamond State retiree
Dorothy Mumford, 94, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Whaleyville, Md., June 20, 1930, to the late Eddie N. Hall and Pauline Donaway Hall.
Dorothy was a dedicated employee of Diamond State Telephone Company, where she retired after 40-plus years of service. Her lifelong career exemplified her commitment, work ethic, and perseverance.
In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed playing cards with her cherished friends and teaching her grandchildren the same games she loved. She was an avid cook, often preparing meals for her family, and her home was a gathering place for family and friends. The joy she found in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was immeasurable, and they, in turn, brought immense happiness into her life.
Dorothy will be fondly remembered for her strong work ethic, selfless nature, and unwavering support and kindness to those around her. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved son, Denis Mumford, who passed away in 2022. She leaves behind one daughter, Diana Pettyjohn of Georgetown; one brother, Ray Hall (Debbie); and one sister, Hilda Foskey of Pittsville, Md. Her memory will live on in the lives of her granddaughters, Karen Irvin and Kathy Pettyjohn; her two great-grandsons, Dane and Emmitt Irvin; many special nieces and nephews; and extended family.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude and appreciation to those who helped care for Dot and allowed her to stay at home, including Denisha and Jessica from AccentCare Hospice, and caregiver, Betty Loucks.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Thursday, Sept. 26, at Watson Funeral Home & Crematorium, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call after 11 a.m. for viewing and visitation. Interment will follow at Lewis Cemetery, Whaleyville, Md.
