The Cape Region attracts so many transplants that people born here consider themselves special – members of the Beebe Babies Club. Dr. Adeline Nakuna moved here because she wants to deliver new members and see the club grow.
After practicing for two years in Dover, Nakuna visited the Lewes area and fell in love with the community. She met with the other doctors and staff at DelMed Health, Women Health Services on Savannah Road and knew it would be her new home.
Nakuna is now the only female obstetrician delivering Beebe babies.
“Many women would rather have a woman,” said Nakuna. “There really is a need for obstetricians in the area, so I am filling that need.”
Her bubbly personality and assuring bedside manner are two ingredients her patients have enjoyed since she started practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Lewes, said DelMed practice manager, Maryanne Johnson. Nakuna enjoys the area’s beach lifestyle, as well as the professional staff available both at DelMed and at Beebe.
“I had been to the area before and really liked it,” Nakuna said. “It is great working in the community and really getting to know my patients.”
Nukuna said she likes the idea of spending time with her patients and really getting to know them as people, not just as a number. She works with women on their overall gynecological health, as well as contraception and other women’s issues.
“As a woman I know some of the problems we face can be frustrating, but I am able to understand have the important conversations with women,” said Nakuna, who recently moved to the Rehoboth Beach area with her husband and four children. This practice allows for more of a personal touch and it allows me to enjoy doing my job,” she said.
Prenatal care and bringing healthy babies into the world are important goals for Nakuna. She said it is important for all women to see a doctor regularly during pregnancy to make sure both the baby and the mother are healthy and safe.
“We were very excited to bring Dr. Nakuna to Lewes,” said Johnson. “She is the right person for this area because she can identify with women’s problems. She is very down to earth and easy to talk to.”
Nakuna has already settled in, delivering several babies at Beebe this month. She is accepting new patients, as are all the doctors at DelMed.
“I look forward to working with adolescents and women of all ages,” Nakuna said.
Nakuna joins Dr. Maxime G. Moise, Dr. Susan A. Kelly and nurse practitioner Mary Ellen Abendroth at DelMed. Besides prenatal and gynecological care, DelMed also offers cosmetic laser skincare to its patients.
