Dr. Eve Hoffman is a 35-year-old orthopaedic surgeon, a graduate of Brown Medical School with residency at University of Maryland Shock Trauma. And Eve can do the Robot, and like Bonnie Raitt, “Rock you like your backbone was her own.” She does spinal surgeries, and certainly the stenosis striders can relate.
At the 40th annual Seashore 5-Miler at Herring Point, Eve, a lifetime runner, was the first woman to cross the finish line, posting a time of 35:31 to break the banner for the first time in her running career.
“I just never got to do that ... it was just awesome,” Eve said.
Joey Andrisani, 39, has knocked down a few banners over the years and he did again Sunday, winning the overall title in 29:28.
Fast friends with close times were Caleb Bradley, 20, who ran 33:41, with Ben Bamforth, 23, right behind him in 33:42. “I had no intention of jumping him at the finish line; that would have been uncool,” Ben said.
John Costello, 61, of Milton was male masters champion in 34:18. Mardiny Ung was the winner of the female masters in 39:48.
A total of 14 runners ran a sub-eight-minute pace on the double-loop trail run. A small, yet happy turnout of 55 runners enjoyed post-race bagels and watermelon slices.
“Here we are at Herring Point just south of the Biden Center, but the trail south is shut off in case Joe Biden decides to go for a bike ride,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “He should have jumped in the race. He could have beaten Mike Richardson, 75, who walked with a cane because of a hip issue at a 27:49 mile pace.”
The next Seashore Striders races are the Georgetown Library 5K Friday, June 17, followed by the Father’s Day 5K Sunday, June 19.
