Election Day weather brings good vibes

Steady stream of voters casting ballots; no reports of shenanigans
November 8, 2016

On the kind of fall day people move to the Cape Region for – and with less than eight hours to go until polls close tonight at 8 p.m. – candidates and supporters are in good spirits.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Carney was at Cape Henlopen High School shortly after 8:30 a.m. He said he felt pretty good, that he and Republican gubernatorial candidate Collin Bonini had laid everything out on the table, and now it was up to the voters.

“I feel pretty good,” he said. “It’s a beautiful day out.”

It was the second stop on Carney’s Delaware tour. He began the day at the Millsboro Fire Hall, and he’s ending in Wilmington. There was a really long line of voters, he said.

A little after noon, Carol Wilkins and Deb Wright were about an hour into their 3-hour shift manning a table in front of the Milton Fire Department for 20th Representative District Republican incumbent Steve Smyk, who is in a three-way race against Democrat Barbara Vaughan and Independent Party of Delaware candidate Don Ayotte.

Wilkins said turnout had been slow since they arrived at 11 a.m., but it was nice being out on the crisp, fall day.

Wright agreed the weather made things easier, but she said she would be out there no matter the conditions.

A quick, “For sure!” was her response to being asked if they’d be out there in the rain.

General information

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Registered voters can find their polling location and sample ballot on the Department of Elections’ website at ivote.de.gov.

In Delaware, voters do not have to show proof of identification before being allowed to vote, but according to the Delaware Department of Elections website, showing an ID makes checking in faster and reduces mistakes. If no ID is shown, a form must be filled out before a person can vote.

Acceptable forms of ID include a Delaware driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, signed polling place or Social Security card, a signed vehicle registration, a signed credit card with photo, or similar document that identifies the person by photo or signature.

For more information, call the Sussex County Department of Elections at 302-856-5367 or go to their website at electionssc.delaware.gov.
