Elizabeth Welbon Alwood, loving mother, grandmother

July 23, 2024

Elizabeth “Betsy” Welbon Alwood, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 20, 2024, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, at Arden Courts Memory Care Home in Fairfax, Va.  She was born May 21, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Besty attended Washington Liberty High School in Arlington, Va., and Longwood College in Farmville, Va.  A blind date in Japan led to a 65-year marriage with her deceased husband, John (Sept 2021). She and John, having raised four children, lived in Michigan (’56-’66), NOVA (’66-’87), Lewes (’87-’18) and NOVA (‘18-present). Homemaker, turned high school English teacher, turned real estate agent; Betsy was a force. Known for being a straight shooter, a quick wit, a voracious reader, an endless drive, a collector of clocks, an eye for gardening, and a passion for golf, Betsy brought energy and life to the table. Betsy, a dear mom and grandma, will be missed.

In a mixture of both sadness and joy, her family celebrates her homecoming with her Lord Jesus, and awaits the day of being united with her in body and spirit.

Betsy is survived by her four children, Bruce (Kathy) Alwood, Karen (Rich) Corpe, Brad (Tim Wallace) Alwood and Kris (John) Colston; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Priscilla Ewy.

A family gathering will take place in September in Lewes, where Betsy and John’s ashes will be buried.

Memorial donations may be made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, curealz.org/giving/donate, 100% of donations go to Alzheimer's research.
