Elks Lodge 2540 holds Flag Day ceremony

June 22, 2016

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Cape Henlopen Lodge 2540 held its annual Flag Day ceremony June 12. The Cape Henlopen Elks also presented awards for its annual Americanism essay contest. The Flag Day ritual is both elaborate and informative. The flags used throughout American history were presented and described. The story of the making of the flag, along with the stories of the battles that the flag has flown over, were told. The Boy Scouts of Troop 2540 ceremoniously folded a flag, and the meaning of each fold was detailed by Lodge President Gary J. Eckenrode. Closing the ceremony was the disposal of unserviceable flags.
