Elma Orton Wright, retired teacher
Elma Orton Wright, 82, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024. She was born Aug. 28, 1941, in Lewes, daughter of the late George Herbert Orton Jr. and Evelyn Gettys Orton. She is an alumnus of Lewes High School Class of 1959, University of Delaware Class of 1963, and University of South Carolina. Elma completed her education with a master’s degree in teaching from Winthrop University. She started her teaching career after college at Pine Tree Hill School in Camden, S.C. in the early ‘60s and then went on to teach at Lugoff Elgin Middle School before retiring in the ‘90s. She was a member of Rowan Presbyterian Church in Lugoff, S.C., and formerly a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes, where she married her late husband in 1961. She enjoyed reading, camping at Lake Wateree, Elvis Presley, fellowshipping, and going to church, and she loved the beach. She was the president of Gettys Family Cemetery Association and a member of the Ladies Circle at Rowan Presbyterian Church in Lugoff.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Russell “Chip” Herbert Wright; sister, Martha Still (wife of George “Tad” Still); and granddaughter, Gabrielle Wright.
She was predeceased by her late husband, Russell Edward Wright; son, Robert Jason Wright; and sisters, Esther Roulain Orton and Evelyn Orton Bura.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gettys Family Cemetery.
