Eric Schuler wins 21st Bill Degnan Memorial race

Runners honor former Cape coach

The 21st running of the Bill Degnan 5K June 26 attracted 94 runners and was won by Eric Schuler from Laurel, Md., in a time of 17:34.

The race was fast at the front, with 15 runners breaking the 22-minute mark.

Following Schuler to the finish line were Martin Rodriguez in 18:23, Paul Montini in 18:47, DJ Farren in 18:54, Chris Stanley in 18:54, Michael Raffetto in 19:24, Eric Payne in 19:46, Greg Schuler in 20:18, John Blackford in 20:22 and Breck Vanderwende in 20:40.

The top 10 women in the race were Meryl Ludwig in 22:15, Rebecca Pepper in 23;16,  Margaret Colvin in 23:35, Karen Johnson in 24:08, Tanya Brown in 24:11, Karen Rams in 24:40, Hannah Pepper in 24:48, Mikayla Cannon in 25:30, Becky Montini in 25:43, and  Jackie Quigley in 25:44.

“The race was small but the spirit was huge,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “We had several former Degnan ‘Faith in Human Spirit’ award winners run the race and many friends of Bill.”
