Eugene Francis McCarthy, had heart of gold

August 6, 2023

Eugene Francis McCarthy, 70, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2023, at his home. He was born Jan. 12, 1953, in Wilmington, son of the late Joseph and Blanche McCarthy.

Gene grew up in the Newport area and attended St. Matthews School and Conrad High School, where he excelled in multiple sports. It was in the Wilmington area that he met the love of his life, Carmelea.  Eventually, they would settle in Lewes. Gene owned and operated Gene McCarthy Painting for well over 30 years. Though he often came across as a grumpy old man, Gene had an absolute heart of gold and would do anything for those he loved. His affection for animals was unmatched. More than anything, Gene was a family man who cherished time spent with those he held most dear.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Loved by many, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Gerald. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carmelea; his daughter, Nicole White (Raymond); his son, Joseph McCarthy (Meghan); his grandchildren, Kaliana, Kimberlyn, Kameron and Maddie Jo; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved Bailey, who laid by his side until the very end.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 12, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m.
