Fireside chat to explore Roosevelt-era photographers Jan. 12

January 4, 2025

Historian Paul Sparrow will host a Fireside Chat reflecting on two influential photographers of the Roosevelt era, Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, at 5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 12, in the fireplace area at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The event will also stream live online via Zoom.

In the mid-20th century, photography emerged as a powerful new art form. No two people captured the Roosevelt era more successfully, and from opposite ends of the spectrum, than Adams and Lange. Sparrow’s presentation, “Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange: Images of America 1930-1950,” will highlight the two artists’ distinct styles and unexpected similarities.

“Lange was a documentarian, most famous for her images of the Great Depression, and Adams the master of the majestic nature photo, perfectly framed and printed,” said Sparrow. “What few know is that they were good friends, and both captured the harsh reality of the Japanese incarceration camps during World War II, creating images that are both shocking and inspiring.”

Sparrow is former director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum.

Seating is limited, and registration is required. At registration, participants will be asked to select in-person or online attendance. To register, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733.
