First Town Club visits Battery 519 at Fort Miles
December 17, 2016
Members of the First Town Club of Lewes visited Battery 519 at Fort Miles Nov. 16. The fort is located in what is now Cape Henlopen State Park. During World War II, it was a key piece in the coastal defense to protect the Delaware Bay and Delaware River. It housed over 2,200 soldiers, and became operational in 1941. Although it had heavy guns, mine fields and searchlights, the soldiers never saw any major action during the war. In April 2005, Fort Miles was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
