Without any warning, the Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach has closed. Signs were taken down and paper hung inside the windows during Christmas week. There’s a heavy bike lock and cable around the door handles.

Five Guys is an Alexandria, Va.-based burger joint franchise that’s been around since the late 1980s.

This is the second time a Five Guys restaurant has opened and then closed on Rehoboth Avenue. The first opened in the early 2000s and closed down in 2011.

There used to be a Five Guys off Route 1 near Lewes in Mariner Plaza. That space is currently home to Pat’s Pizza, which took over the location in January 2012.

According to the corporate website for Five Guys, there are still eight franchise locations in Delaware, with the closest being in Bethany Beach at 111 Garfield Parkway.
