Flood advisory for Kent, Sussex counties

Rain may cause minor flooding
September 19, 2016

Kent and Sussex counties are under a flood advisory Sept. 19 until 8:30 p.m., the National Weather Service reports.

Weather service radar indicates 3 to 5 inches of rain have fallen in many areas, with up to 6 inches in some areas. The Delaware Environmental Observing System recorded 3.54 inches of rain at the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk within the last 24 hours.

Only minor flooding of roadways and poorly drained areas is expected. The advisory warns motorists against driving in areas where water covers the roadway. The weather service also warns there is a moderate risk for dangerous rip currents to develop.

A chance of rain may continue through Tuesday, Sept. 20, and early morning Wednesday, Sept. 21, but is not expected to create any additional hazardous conditions, National Weather Service forecasts show.

Rain is to blame for at least two accidents in Sussex County Sept. 19. At about 11:30 a.m., a 2015 Nissan Titan overturned on Route 1 just north of the Indian River Bridge, sending two people to Beebe Medical Hospital with minor injuries, police said. At about 3:30 p.m., a school bus was rear-ended by a Jeep Cherokee on Route 9 near Milton after the Jeep reportedly slid on the slick roadway, police said. No injuries were reported in the crash involving the bus.
