Florence Young Kirby, devout Christian
Florence Young Kirby, 100, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Rehoboth Beach and Oakmont, Pa., passed away Saturday, Aug. 6, 2023.
Florence was born in Verona, Pa., Nov. 23, 1922, to Arthur J. Young and Olive Condron Young. She worked for several years as a payroll clerk for Ingalls Ironworks Company in Verona. While working there, she met the love of her life, William A. Kirby, to whom she had been married for 75 years.
As a mother and homemaker, Florence was active in Oakmont United Presbyterian Church and volunteered for school activities and scouts. After moving to Rehoboth Beach, Florence enjoyed bowling in a senior league. She volunteered for 25 years at the information desk and gift shop at Beebe Medical Center, and was an active member of Lewes Presbyterian Church. After moving to Florida to live with her daughter and son-in-law, she enjoyed reading Christian novels and watching sports, game shows and westerns on television.
Florence is survived by her daughter, Susan DiIorio (Jim); and son, William J. Kirby; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Kirby; her siblings, her twin Charles Frederick Young, Arthur James Young Jr., Jane Young Barr and George Condron Young; and her great-grandson, James Shannon.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, at Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes.
