In an effort to promote healthy living and navigating retirement, the Food Bank of Delaware hosted a senior health fair at its Milford facility April 30.
The health fair was an opportunity for seniors to learn more about services in the area, whether it be medical, dental, financial or nutritional. Among the seniors who attended was Dolores Price, who said she frequently attends senior fairs to try to get more information on taking care of her health.
Food Bank of Delaware spokeswoman Kim Turner said its been a while since the nonprofit hosted an event like this; eight years ago, the Food Bank of Delaware had a senior health fair at its former facility on Mattlind Way, but it soon outgrew the space. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the food bank was unable to host large-scale events, Turner said.
With the opening of the food bank’s new complex across from Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club, she said it was the perfect time to bring the fair back.
“We wanted to do something for area seniors so they can come out and get information to help them lead an active, healthy life,” Turner said.
Seniors make up a chunk of the food bank’s clientele, including serving 1,500 seniors through a senior nutrition program.
“It’s definitely a population that is in need of food assistance and other services,” Turner said. “Things are expensive. If you’re living on a small Social Security check and are trying to pay rent or mortgage, pay your utility bills and pay for groceries, there’s often not a lot of money left.”
