Fort Miles to honor veterans with free tours of Battery 519 Nov. 14

November 4, 2015

Battery 519 at Fort Miles will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, for free tours for veterans and their families to show appreciation for veterans’ service. The standard charge of $5 per person will be collected from non-veterans who wish to tour the battery in Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes.

Battery 519 is one of the underground gun emplacements built into the great dune at Cape Henlopen to defend the mouth of Delaware Bay during World War II. Docents will be located throughout the battery to answer questions and talk about displays in the battery’s rooms.

These include a plotting table used to aim the big guns, a shell room and powder room where ammunition for the guns was stored, and a 205-ton, 12-inch gun similar to weapons used in World War II.
