Free self-care workshops for parents kick off Jan. 9

January 8, 2024

In order to provide healthy, positive care for others, it is imperative that parents and caregivers attend to their own wellness needs.

The Lewes Public Library and Child Inspired are calling parents and caregivers who are in need of an oxygen boost: O2 4U will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan.  9, and continue Feb. 13 and March  12, at the library. These workshops will teach parents and caregivers simple ways to attend to their own physical and mental health while caring for children.

Child Inspired's licensed mental health counselor Allison Veith will educate participants on wellness strategies that can be integrated into their daily interactions and routines. Hiba Melhem Stancofski, a yoga and mindfulness teacher, and author of "I Feel Better Now," will then guide caregivers through therapeutic mindfulness practices to enhance their physical and mental wellness. SoDel Concepts also graciously donated a gift certificate to be raffled for a winning participant at the end of the program.

Children are welcome to participate in a fun activity with Child Inspired’s family educators in a separate space while caregivers engage in the therapist-facilitated wellness activity.

“A spa treatment or getaway can be a fabulous self-care break, but these things are expensive, and don’t sustain us through the daily demands and stressors that impact our overall well-being,” said Christina Connors, Child Inspired director of clinical services. “Caregivers need self-care practices that can be easily integrated into their daily routines. O2 4U will provide an opportunity for caregivers to learn, participate in and practice simple yet effective calming, coping and connection strategies in a supportive, inclusive environment.”

The program is free and open to all parents and caregivers of children. To register, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Child Inspired is a family-centered therapeutic practice offering speech/feeding therapy, occupational therapy and behavioral therapy to support children with developmental delays, fine/gross motor coordination issues, psychological needs and sensory processing differences in Southern Delaware.
