Gail Wingate Johnston, former Rehoboth librarian
Gail Wingate Johnston, 79, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep, Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, after a decade-long battle with breast cancer. Gail, a Rehoboth Beach native, was born Oct. 11, 1934, to Berman Paul "Mac" Melvin and Sara Wingate Melvin, daughter of the former Rehoboth Beach Mayor Ralph M. Wingate.
She graduated valedictorian from Rehoboth High School in 1952 and went on to the University of Delaware. Famous for her high intelligence, scholastic ability, and being incredibly well-read, Gail taught kindergarten at Rehoboth Elementary School for eight years and was library director of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library for 13 years.
She devoted her entire life to her family, practically raised three generations of children as her own, served as primary caretaker for her father and mother in their later years, and provided assistance to other relatives in times of need. She received strength from her loved ones and was happiest when she could be helpful to others.
She is survived by her two sons, Barry Johnston and wife Megan, and Jeff Johnston; five grandchildren: Amy and husband Lee, Mark and wife Bobbi, Jessica and husband Nick, Cory and husband Jeff, and Trevor; five great-grandchildren: Gavin, Ava, Kevin, Owen and Beverly; a sister, Joan; two nieces: Mimi and Brooke; a cousin, Lynne; an honorary daughter, Missy and many, many more!
A private graveside service will be held at Epworth Methodist Cemetery in Rehoboth Beach.
