Gallo Gives Foundation awards community donations

May 6, 2018

As part of a continued pledge to support the community in which they live and work, the management, agents and staff of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty have formed the Gallo Gives Foundation. This year's second-quarter foundation earnings were awarded to Clear Space Theatre, Immanuel Shelter, Cape Community Fund, Crisis House and the Cape Henlopen Food Basket;. Also, $1,250 has been set aside for a college-bound senior scholarship that will be available in spring 2019.

The Gallo Gives Foundation is funded primarily through the company’s agents, management and staff. Agents are encouraged to donate a percentage of their commissions earned, and the firm matches all agent/staff contributions 100 percent. Public donations are accepted as well. Each of the Gallo Realty offices in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach is represented by individuals who serve on the foundation’s giving committee. Members research community charities in need and recommend funding. The foundation is managed by the Greater Lewes Foundation.

Here is some information about this quarter’s recipients.

Clear Space Theatre is a professional acting company based in downtown Rehoboth Beach that produces dozens of performances throughout the year. This donation of $1,250 will go toward underwriting its summer program for children. Support of this kind allows Clear Space Theatre to sell tickets at just $5 each so more families can enjoy and participate in professional live theatre at the beach. This summer, "Pinocchio" and "Snow White" will be performed every Saturday in July for area children. To learn more, go to www.clearspacetheatre.org.

Receiving $1,000, Immanuel Shelter in Rehoboth Beach provides winter refuge services to those experiencing homelessness in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and surrounding areas. Housing adult men and women from the harsh, sometimes life-threatening, winter elements, the shelter also offers Code Purple services providing food, clothing, basic human necessities and friendly companionship. The Immanuel Shelter provides compassionate, trained and skilled staff and volunteer services that demonstrate respect and dignity for all homeless guests. BHHS Gallo team members also prepare meals for the residents in the winter months. To get involved, go to www.immanuelshelter.org.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is the philosophy behind the Cape Community Fund. Southern Delaware is a growing and changing landscape, but one quality that remains a constant in the community is the willingness of neighbors to help neighbors. A grant of $1,000 was awarded to this organization, which was created to expedite and manage donations to individuals who are experiencing illness or have had unexpected catastrophe or setbacks. Crisis House in Georgetown has been an oasis for the homeless to the west of the beach resorts since 1981. It provides shelter and support services to homeless individuals and families in an environment that nurtures personal and family dignity, enhances self-esteem, and promotes independence, housing stability and financial security. A donation of $750 will help support the growing needs of the shelter. To learn how to support Crisis House and to read success stories of past residents, go to www.scchsinc.org.

A partner agency of the Food Bank of Delaware, the Cape Henlopen Food Basket is on Oyster House Road in Rehoboth Beach. Each month, the organization serves approximately 200 hungry families from the Cape Henlopen School District. Some come for emergency food, while others need supplemental food to help get them through the month. A group of 80 dedicated volunteers staff and maintain the food basket, which is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,  Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Gallo Gives donated $500 to this worthwhile organization. For more information or to donate, go to www.capehenlopenfoodbasket.org.
