A silent vigil in support of the rule of law and the assertion that no one is above the law was held March 23 in Lewes. We had informed the Cape Gazette earlier in the week and were told that the Gazette is not covering national news.
The Cape Gazette editorial board needs to rethink this policy. All politics is local, and when local citizens voice their concerns for national issues, it is not national news, it is local. We need to know what members of our community are doing to support, oppose or otherwise engage national concerns, issues and leaders.
The silent vigil in Lewes has been a unique means of witnessing to the concerns of local citizens. It has consistently taken positive and supportive stances, remembering in silent but strong presence our concern for children separated from parents, those killed in terror attacks, those killed in war, the people of Ukraine and the rule of law. Our silence is a time for gathering energy for the work to be done.
I believe the local press has a primary role in encouraging the free expression of ideas. When it decides not to report on local events related to national concerns, it fails in its role as a recorder of those ideas and movements that make this community the vital and wonderful one it is.
I hope the Cape Gazette will revise its stance on reporting on the vigil and other forms of social action in our area.
