Gelof brothers give back to the community

December 6, 2024

Major league brothers Zack and Jake Gelof held their annual Youth Sports Camp at Cape Henlopen High School Nov. 27, when nearly 80 future stars ranging from 8 to 13 years old had a fun day of baseball, soccer, basketball and more.

“We are fortunate to live in a special community,” said Zack. “This event isn’t just about us. There are so many highly successful local scholar-athletes and coaches who help out. We have an MLB scout, and state and national college champions in many sports represented on staff. We look forward to this so much because it’s a chance to get together with those friends and all try to give the kids a day of fun while seeing the benefits of setting goals and working hard.”

Zack and Jake are professional baseball players. Zack was drafted in the second round with the 60th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and is the starting second baseman for the Oakland Athletics. Jake was drafted in the second round with the 60th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The mission of the Gelof Brothers Foundation is to provide resources and assistance to support the overall development of youth.

Several of the future stars expressed great praise for the camp.

“The hitting station was my favorite,” said James Deinert. “They were telling me where to hit the ball and to aim it. I learned some things to make me a better hitter.”

“I really enjoyed the camp, especially the race at the end,” said his big brother Will.

“I missed out on it last year, so I really looked forward to it this year,” said camper Colton Purdue “I especially liked meeting the Gelofs. The basketball was the best part because I crossed someone up.”

The event ended with a raffle where campers got to pick prizes from Oakland A’s gear and Jake and Zack Victus bats. Backpacks filled with fun items were given to each camper. A question-and-answer session ended the camp.
