George F. Siegfried, enjoyed many careers
George F. Siegfried of Milton passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024, with his loving family by his side. George was born May 23, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa. He along with his parents moved to Milton circa 1945. He graduated from Milton High School, which is also where he met the love of his life, Doris Estelle Mills. They married in 1955 in the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in Milton.
George, along with his parents, owned and operated Siegfried Hosiery Mill for many years. After that, he went on to reinvent himself several times. He was captain of his own oyster boat, the Pauline Parks, dredging oysters and crabs in Delaware Bay. He went on to earn his captain’s license and operated pilot boats for Delaware Bay Launch Service, and later the launch named the Peggy O. Later, he started a new career doing work for the state parks and recreation department that included marine construction and building docks. This led to the start of Siegfried Machine & Supply Inc., a utility construction company. George held licenses in water treatment and was a wastewater operator. In 2009, he was presented the Environmental Lifetime Achievement Award by Delaware Technical & Community College.
George was a special kind of guy whom everyone liked. His love of science and history made for interesting conversations. He was always eager to learn as much as he could, and his creative thinking was valued throughout the various projects he was involved with. He was always willing to share his knowledge with others to help them learn and achieve on their own. Both his sons and grandsons had opportunities to work and learn from him over the years.
He loved his family. He loved the town of Milton. He was a good friend to many and will be very missed.
He is predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Siegfried; his wife Doris Siegfried; and his brother Jimmy Siegfried. He is survived by his four children, Susan Caudell (John), Scott Siegfried, Sandra Siegfried and Stanley Siegfried (Sarah); grandchildren, Bret Caudell, Nicole Caudell Nolan (Matt), Elysia Berman (Jim), Josh Berman (Rose) and Skylar Siegfried (Brandon); and four great-grandchildren, Tallulah, Celia, Edith and Margo Nolan.
Special thanks to caregiver June Spence for all she did for him and being there with the family as George passed peacefully at home. Also special thanks to Vitas Hospice and the Meals on Wheels volunteers. George enjoyed their friendship and looked forward to seeing them each day.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Milton Fire Department. There will be visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, April 5, followed by a small service at Short Funeral Services chapel, 416 Federal St., Milton. A private family graveside service will follow at the Milton Cemetery.
