George Powell Lyon, active in community

George Powell Lyon, 90, of Lewes passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at his home. He was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Harold and Florence Lyon.

Mr. Lyon was a graduate of Lower Merion Senior High School and The College of William and Mary, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. He also attended the Wharton Graduate Division of the University of Pennsylvania.  Mr. Lyon was president of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity, president of the International Relations Club, and a member of the Intrafraternity Council.

A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Lyon served during the Korean War and was a reservist for eight additional years.  He was employed by the American Meter Company as an industrial relations manager, then became a plant manager of one of their factories, manufacturing parts for gas meters.  Later he joined Sylvania Electric Home Electronics, where he was responsible for television product planning.  Mr. Lyon later became vice president of marketing services, overseeing product planning, advertising, sales promotion, major account sales, and customer orders.  After these endeavors, he became president of E. A. Butler Associates, an executive search firm.  In 1980 Mr. Lyon formed his own management consulting firm, George P. Lyon Associates, representing industrial and banking clients, until his retirement in 1992.

For 30 years, he lived in Doylestown, Pa., where he was active in community affairs.  He was treasurer of the Bucks County Library System, chairman of the Doylestown Hospital Authority, vice president of the Doylestown Borough Council, and a member of the board of directors of the Doylestown Hospital Foundation.  Mr. Lyon was a member of the Republican Committee of Bucks County. He later became dissatisfied with Republican policies and rhetoric, and joined the Democratic Party. Mr. Lyon was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Government Service Efficiency of the joint State Government Commission of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania.  He also served on the Bucks County Operations Review and Evaluation Committee.  Mr. Lyon received the Legion of Honor Award for Community Service in Bucks County from the Chapel of the Four Chaplains.

Retiring in Lewes, Mr. Lyon was a member of the Friends of Lewes Library, served as president of the Lewes Public Library, was a volunteer as well as president of the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, and chair of the finance Committee of the Academy of Lifelong Learning. He was an ordained elder in the United Presbyterian Church and was a member of Conley's Methodist Church. 

He leaves his loving wife of 63 years, Frances Chaffee Lyon; his three daughters: Janette (Scott), Laura (Paul), and Pam (Peter); his grandchildren: Allison, James, Sarah, Kirsten, Wesley, Acadia, and Kai; and his great-grandchild, Finley. 

Funeral arrangements will be made at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Wattsburg Cemetery in Erie County, Pa.
