Georgetown Eagle Scout project is complete
A three-dimensional mural of Georgetown and Delaware history in Georgetown is the Eagle Scout project of Daniel Swain.
“A former scoutmaster encouraged those of us interested in pursuing our Eagle rank to find a project which highlighted our individual interests and talents. I enjoy drawing and painting and have an interest in history,” said Swain, who put his interests to work to design and paint a mural featuring prominent buildings in Georgetown. “My scoutmasters were encouraging because this is a fairly unique Eagle Scout project compared to what many of my peers have done,” he said.
“After I chose what project I wanted to complete, I wanted to find a location with good visibility in the Georgetown area,” said Swain, eventually settling on the barrel barn at the Marvel Carriage Museum, highly visible from South Bedford Street. After proposing the idea to the museum, he began this two-year Eagle Scout project.
The barn wall was prepped, which required scraping, power washing and repainting. Instead of painting directly on the barn, Swain decided to paint the buildings on panels that would be assembled into a three-dimensional mural. Swain coordinated a team of volunteers that included fellow scouts, friends and family.
Swain,18, is a member of Troop 95 in Georgetown. He graduated from Sussex Central High School in 2017 and attends the University of Delaware where he is pursuing a degree in history education.
