September 3, 2020

Georgetown held the annual wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of Patrolman Chad Spicer Sept. 1 on The Circle. Spicer was killed in the line of duty Sept. 1, 2009.

Nearly 200 people attended the annual event, emceed by Georgetown Police Chief R.L. Hughes. Speaking at the event were Georgetown Mayor Bill West, Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, and Chad’s mom Ruth Ann Spicer.

Hughes read a scripture that reminded him of Chad: “Isaiah chapter 6, verse 8 said, ‘Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” and I said, “Here I am, send me!”’ I am confident that Chad would have said ‘Send me!’ His dedication to the Georgetown community and to his fellow officers forged his commitment to serving others.”

Pettyjohn spoke of how the community reacted on that tragic day. West told Chad’s mother that he will be there to honor Chad forever.

Ruth Ann Spicer spoke about how the police supported her family during and since the tragic death of her son. She also said that the police departments need the support of the public during this time.
