Girl Scouts of the USA celebrated 2012 as the Year of the Girl as they marked their 100th anniversary March 12, and the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay celebrated their 50 years.
In honor of the Girl Scouts' 100 years, a birthday celebration was held March 9-12 at the Clarion Resort in Ocean City, Md. More than 1,200 girls and adults from the Delmarva Peninsula attended the celebration. Events included an opening flag ceremony, activity stations, crafts, boat building and races, an Alumnae Reunion luncheon, rededication ceremony, cupcakes, a Girl Scouts Talent Show, the Guinness Book of World Records' largest batch of Gorp trail mix and a closing flag ceremony.
For 100 years, Girl Scouts has been building girls of courage, confidence and character by providing personal leadership development and programs that teach skills for the real world. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of more than 3.2 million girls and adults, a significant growth from its modest beginnings nearly a century ago. In fact, more than 50 million women in the U.S. today are Girl Scouts alumnae.
The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council serves approximately 15,000 girls in grades K-12 across the Delmarva Peninsula. Approximately 5,000 adult volunteers support the council in various mentoring and leadership positions.
