THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINES

Give Pederson a fair shot!

January 22, 2016

The Philadelphia media is being a bit overdramatic when it comes to Doug Pederson being hired as the Eagles' next head coach. Just because his name is not Sean Peyton or Tom Coughlin doesn't mean he's going to do a poor job. When Andy Reid was hired in 1999, he did not have a very extensive resume either, and he did a very good job for a long time. So to the local Philadelphia media, get over it! Doug Pederson is here to stay and isn't going anywhere for a while.

I apologize to my readers. Last week, I completely forgot to mention the college football National Championship game. Alabama won 45-40 in a very competitive game over Clemson. The competitiveness of this game saved face for a generally uneventful bowl season. Out of the 43 games, I can count on one hand the number of close games. I do wish ESPN would have started the National Championship game at 6 or 7 p.m. so everyone can watch the whole game. There is a reason why the Super Bowl always starts at 6:30; to get the most viewership possible. I was only able to watch the first half of the game. I would have liked to have watched the entire game in order to give all of you a more detailed analysis of what happened.

In other regional sports news, there is a slim possibility for one of the Philly sports teams to make the playoffs. As of this week, the Philadelphia Flyers are just a few points outside of an NHL playoff spot. I'm hoping they can make the playoffs so that I can cheer for more than just the Phillies this spring.

I'm also very aware that the Australian Open tennis tournament has begun. I will report on it in two weeks when it's over. There are way too many matches each day to be able to keep up with who is doing well. Sadly, Rafa Nadal has already lost. Let's hope this is not the trend for the rest of the tournament.
