Gloria Bowen, loved children
Gloria "Gay" Bowen, 87, of Millsboro, passed away Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at Cadia Healthcare Renaissance. She was born and grew up in Accomack, Va., daughter of the late Richard and Leona (Wessells) Young.
After high school, she moved to Wilmington, where she met and married John Bowen. They spent 47 years together, precededing her in death, as did her brother, Arnold Young of Hampton, Va.; and sister, Sue Massey of Newark.
Gay worked in children's dentistry for 13 years and is a past member of the Brandywine New Century Club. In 1984, the family moved to Sussex County, where Gay worked as an LPN in geriatrics for 10 years. She was also past president of the Kent-Sussex Association for Children and Adults with learning disabilities. Gay sang with Bethany Sweet Adlines and Pine Tones Chorus in Ocean Pines, Md.
Gay is survived by her daughter, Gena Evans of Bridgeville; her granddaughter, Alicia Hamilton of Millsboro; her niece, Eve Stocks of Virginia Beach; and several cousins in Wilmington. Gay loved children and was a devoted grandmother to her granddaughter, Alicia. Her presence will be deeply and genuinely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A viewing will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 14, at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes. Interment will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers, Gay has requested a donation in her memory to Special Olympics, 619 S. College Ave., Newark, DE 19716.
