The Cape softball team could only garner three hits in a 6-0 shutout loss to Sussex Central April 20. The loss dropped the Vikings to 4-4, while the Knights are 8-1.
Central junior Madge Layfield struck out 16 Cape batters in the game. Cape sophomore Abby Marsh started in the circle for the Vikings, giving up eight hits in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Bri Windish came in to finish the game, allowing just two hits and striking out two in 4.1 innings.
Takylea Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kierstan Anderson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kameron Sockriter, Amara Cropper, Ella Justice and Catherine Hassler each knocked in an RBI.
Abby Marsh, Jay’Lyn Slater and Nataylia Roundtree had hits for the Vikings.
The Vikings got back in the win column with a 5-3 victory over Padua April 22.
Cape had a complete game from Marsh, who scattered nine hits, struck out 10 Pandas and allowed just two walks.
Windish led the Vikings going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kenna Justice went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Slater slammed a double. Ava Calciano, Roundtree and Ava Simeone each garnered a hit.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
