Guy S. Townsend Jr., dedicated community volunteer
Guy S. Townsend Jr., 73, of Lewes, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022, at his home. He was born Oct. 10, 1948, in Chester, Pa., son of the late Guy S. and Doris (Hines) Townsend.
Guy was a graduate of Sun Valley High School, Class of 1966. Following in his father’s footsteps, he became a pipefitter and member of Local Union 74 for over 30 years. During his time in the union, he served on the executive committee board and taught apprentice school from 1992-97. He was active with the Suburban Little League and over the years coached both the boys’ baseball and girls' softball teams.
Retiring in 2011, Guy enjoyed playing pickleball, golfing, cycling and spending time on the beach fishing. He was a loyal Philadelphia sports fan, particularly fond of his beloved Eagles and Phillies. Guy enjoyed happy hours, especially at Irish Eyes, listening to his favorite local bands. He volunteered with several Lewes organizations including the Lightship Overfalls as a tour guide and was a member of the Dirty Hands Gang for Lewes in Bloom as a Warehouse Warrior and Lewes Historical Society’s Rusty Nails Gang. Recently, he took up watercolor painting and spent many hours creating his masterpieces. Above all, Guy cherished time with those he held most dear. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Loved by many, he will be genuinely missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
Guy was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Townsend. He is survived by his wife, Susan M. Townsend of Lewes; his children: Erin Staudt (Greg) of Bear and Guy Townsend III of Wilmington; his stepchildren: Richard Clark (Jessica Smith) of Bear and Kimberly David (James) of Middletown; his grandchildren: Karina Perez, Sophia Staudt, Ethan Staudt, James David Jr. and Madelyn David; his sister, Barbara Antonelli (Mike) of Brookhaven, Pa.; and his former wife, Jo-Anne Townsend.
