Margaret (Marge) Gayhardt was born in Dublin, Ireland, Aug. 30, 1917. Friends and family joined her to celebrate her 100th birthday at Big Fish Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach Saturday, Aug. 26.
Marge arrived in America with her mother, two sisters and a brother, landing at Ellis Island in New York City. Her father never joined the family, which caused financial hardship for them. The kids lived in foster homes in Baltimore until they reached an age when they could work and earn money.
Marge married Harold Gayhardt in 1939, and they had three daughters, Myrna, Peggy and Lee. The family lived in Maryland and Pennsylvania until finally settling in Millersville, Md., in 1949.
Her marriage to Harold ended in 1964. Marge dated Irvin Simms for 40 years until they finally married in September 2005 at the age of 85.
Marge has six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She now lives with daughter Myrna in Lewes.
