Gardening and spending time in and around nature can heal. Research shows that spending time around nature – both indoors and out – improves people’s moods, mitigates stress, boosts self-confidence and positively impacts physical health.

When a person gardens, the brain releases serotonin and dopamine. Soil contains mycobacterium vaccae, which triggers the release of serotonin specifically, and this lifts mood and reduces anxiety. Gardening reduces cortisol levels and promotes healthy stress responses.

The physical act of gardening is good for physical well-being. Plants also improve indoor air quality. Scientists have identified over 300 indoor air pollutants that plants help remove. In addition, gardening encourages movement and is a great way to include some exercise in the day.
