Henlopen Motor Lodge opens in 1959

August 15, 2023

The Henlopen Motor Lodge once operated in Rehoboth Beach next to the Henlopen Hotel. The lodge included 30 rooms and four suites, plus a penthouse suite.

According to a 1959 article about its opening, “The Henlopen Motor Lodge offers individual temperature control and is the first leisure commercial structure in the East to utilize electricity exclusively for heat.” Added at the same time were a court and a large outdoor pool in the area between the lodge and the Henlopen Hotel.

The lodge was demolished along with the Henlopen Hotel in 1972 to make way for the existing hotel-apartment complex. At the time, the project to build the new Henlopen Hotel cost about $10 million.
