History Revival: Food and Drink Across Delmarva kicks off Oct. 11
The popular History Revival lecture series from the Lewes Public Library and the Zwaanendael Museum returns this fall with programs highlighting the rich history of agriculture on the Delmarva Peninsula.
For centuries, Delaware has grown, produced and brewed foods and drinks that have traveled across the country and around the world. But where do these goods come from, and who are the people – past and present – who have made this possible? Through engaging programs and lectures, the History Revival: Food and Drink Across Delmarva series will highlight the unique goods that have graced Delaware’s tables throughout history and continue to do so today.
“Food brings people together, and this year’s series has something for every taste,” said Devon Filicicchia, Zwaanendael Museum site supervisor. “Attendees will learn about military cuisine and the Delmarva poultry industry. They can sip some tea and explore the flavors of Southern Delaware, and join us for a special film screening to see the stories of Black watermen in the Chesapeake Bay come to life.”
The series will kick off at 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, with Dr. Christiane Warren, executive director of the Delaware Agricultural Museum. She will present “Produce and Dairy Farming in the Small Wonder State” and review the museum’s new exhibition on Produce & Food, developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute. She will discuss the history of the dairy industry in Delaware, in advance of the museum’s upcoming Dairying in Delaware exhibit.
All events will be held in person at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. Most will also be available to view online via Zoom. To register and learn more, go to tinyurl.com/HistoryRevival2024 or call the library at 302-645-2733. At registration, participants will be asked to select in-person or virtual attendance.
