With an expansion move in the region, Wawa opened a new Georgetown convenience store, its fifth of nine planned store openings in the Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C., region.

During the June 29 grand opening and ribbon cutting, the store sponsored a Hoagies for Heroes contest, testing the sandwich-making skills of the Georgetown Fire Company, Georgetown Police Department and Georgetown Elementary School. After two minutes of rapid-fire hoagie construction, elementary staff finished in first place with 23 hoagies. They were followed by the police with 21 and firefighters with 19. The event also featured some lettuce slinging from the school staff on their competitors. Each of the teams received a $1,000 donation from Wawa.

The new Georgetown Wawa, with 60 employees, will be open 24 hours a day. It is located at 20938 DuPont Hwy. The ribbon cutting, sponsored by the Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, was among the largest in recent memory. Sussex County is now home to 10 Wawa stores in Georgetown, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach (two), Seaford, Millsboro, Bethany Beach, Milford, Delmar and Bridgeville.

“We are super excited. It’s taken us seven years working closely with the town and mayor,” said Mandy Wynne, southern district director of store operations. “We will continue to build in southern Delaware.”

She said Laurel could be the next location of a Wawa.

“We will raise money for local charities. We want to be at grassroots in Georgetown,” she added.

The Wawa Foundation, which is a major supporter of Special Olympics Delaware, is raising money for the USO.

Wawa, which started as a dairy farm operation in 1902 in Delaware County, Pa., opened its first convenience store April 16, 1964, in Folsom, Pa. The first Delaware store opened in 1969.
