Howard E. Tranthum, dedicated to family, community
Howard E. Tranthum passed away peacefully Friday, March 15, 2024, in Rehoboth Beach, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born April 29, 1949, in Lewes.
Howard's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and his passion for the simple pleasures of life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Kelly Tranthum; his son, Howard Jr. of Georgetown; his stepdaughter, Kathleen Olkowski of Wilmington; and son-in-law, Andy Rash. Howard's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Amanda Fitts (Joshua), Samantha Rash, Andrea Rash and Shane Rash (Maddie); and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Arvil; sisters, Nancy Tranthum and Betty Barrett (Zarro) of Delaware City; and several cherished nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his parents, William and Doris Tranthum; and his daughter, April Rash.
Howard's life was rich with hobbies and interests that brought joy not only to himself but also to those around him. He was an avid cook, finding solace and joy in the kitchen, where he created meals that brought his family together. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for crabbing in Rehoboth Bay and fishing in the Florida Keys with his dear friend, Pete White. These activities were not just pastimes for Howard; they were a way to connect with nature and with the people he loved.
As a proud member of the Lewes Moose 646, Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540, and AMVETS Post 2, Howard's sense of community was strong. He believed in the power of fellowship and service, and he dedicated much of his time to the activities and missions of these organizations.
Howard’s life was one of purpose and joy. He was a loving husband, a caring father, and a loyal friend. His selfless nature was the cornerstone upon which he built his life, and it is the legacy he leaves behind. As we say farewell to Howard, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.
