Huxtable delivers on affordable housing and more

October 11, 2024

Affordable housing is one of the most challenging issues facing Sussex County today. Virtually every candidate says they are for it. But what have they done to advance affordable housing solutions?

Russ Huxtable is the only candidate with comprehensive experience and an understanding of how to incorporate affordable housing into our communities. And he’s turned that knowledge into action. Gov. Carney signed seven bills into law last session alone related to housing needs in the state – six were sponsored by Huxtable.

The bills provide much-needed funds for home repairs, foreclosure mediation, incentives for developers building affordable and workforce housing projects, and greater protections for residents living in manufactured housing communities.

Some might say these were small steps. I say this is just the beginning. We need to re-elect Russ Huxtable and see what he can accomplish in the next four years. His mission for housing includes securing greater state investment, expanding the variety of housing choices and increasing resources for those providing supportive services (healthcare professionals, teachers and retail/service workers).

Solving the affordable housing problem in Sussex County will have a huge domino effect on both the economy and our quality of life. It will make it possible for working families to afford to live where they work, which will provide more teachers to improve education, more medical professionals to enhance healthcare availability and more service workers to keep our community operating. It will provide families with more discretionary income to spend or save. It will create jobs, both short and long term. The safety and security of a stable home improves the physical and mental well-being of the entire family, including children who can be more successful in school. It decreases childhood poverty and helps prevent homelessness.

I cannot emphasize enough the impact lack of affordable housing is having on Sussex County.

Please re-elect Russ Huxtable for state Senate District 6. Give him four more years to lead our Legislature on affordable housing solutions and so much more. Go to his website, russhuxtable.com, to learn more about Russ and his accomplishments in the Senate.
