Huxtable has a meager record

March 26, 2024

I know that I wasn't the only one reading the recent endorsement statement from the 14th Representative District Democratic Committee of state Sen. Russ Huxtable, who found much of the narrative within it a misrepresentation of facts. While we have all seen the downward spiral of truth, especially on the national level, to see it here locally passed along as facts by Democratic elites was both bizarre and disingenuous.

Candidly, there are few in Delaware, especially from those who view politics through a bipartisan lens, who see Russ Huxtable as a legislative leader. The minimal record of bills passed have been mostly done without consultation and collaboration with key stakeholders, and, in turn, true improvements have gone unrealized. While canned applause has been made of a bill prohibiting commercial development in Cape Henlopen State Park, the true challenge of generating revenue for the safety of park operations and maintenance is a reality Huxtable either is allergic to addressing or simply choosing to ignore. As chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Huxtable has only convened the committee for a public meeting on one occasion since the start of the new year and held just three previous meetings in 2023. Compare that with the Senate Health Committee, of which Huxtable is not even a member, which has met on 20 occasions over the same time. If folks are in search of a do-nothing committee chair in the Delaware Senate, look no further than Huxtable.

Finally, let's correct the record on this district's history, which local Democrats and Russ especially love to fictionalize as some Republican stronghold. The 6th Senate District, when it was moved to Sussex County in 2012, was mapped out as a Democratic majority district. It was the case then and still is the case now, even more so after Delaware Democrats gerrymandered it to a greater degree after the 2020 census.

What made the 6th a Republican district wasn't anything traditionally ensured by a political party, it was the bipartisan strength of having one of the most respected members of the General Assembly, who happened to be a Republican, in Ernie Lopez. He went undefeated electorally, humiliating the local Democratic establishment which now utilizes a fictional narrative in trying to make their one-term wonder of Huxtable into something more than his meager record and the facts demonstrate.
