Huxtable listens and makes things happen

October 8, 2024

Lots of people in Delaware don’t know Russ Huxtable outside of what they may read in the local papers, but we do. We had what most might consider a minor short-term traffic and safety issue when a DelDOT road reconstruction project detoured traffic next to our subdivision in Sussex County.

The traffic became a nightmare on our two-lane road, where it ends (with a stop sign) and intersects with another two-lane through road abutting our community. Cars were in gridlock, not just during busy times but at all hours of the day, and since only one of the roads had a stop sign, the backup on that road, combined with fast, heavy traffic on the other, was a fuse for a potential road rage incident and an accident ready to happen.

We didn’t know where to go to report our concern. DelDOT? Sussex P&Z? Sussex County Council? We had little faith that anything would be done.

Fortunately, we thought to contact our state senator, Russ Huxtable. We were blown away by his responsiveness! He examined the intersection and determined that the solution to controlling the traffic and relieving the backups was placing stop signs on the through street, making it a three-way stop.

Within a week, there were advance signs placed, letting everyone know that new stop signs were going to be installed. By the next week, stop signs, along with a flashing light in each direction, were installed. Problem solved. Possible accidents and even injuries avoided.

The road construction has since been completed, and the original detour is no longer in place, but the signs are here to stay. They continue to do their job, eliminating backups and safety issues.

We have Sen. Russ Huxtable to thank for this. He listens, he learns, and he responds. We are so thankful that we have Russ as our state senator!
